Carlotta Grisi (June 28, 1819 – May 20, 1899) was an Italian ballet dancer. She was famous for creating the role of Giselle.

Early life

Grisi was born in Visinada, Istria (now part of Croatia). Her real name was Caronne Adele Josephine Marie Grisi. She was trained at the ballet school of Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

At her 1836 debut in London, Grisi danced with Jules Perrot.^[1] She next appeared in Paris at the Théâtre de la Renaissance in 1840. A year later, she toured with Perrot to Paris, London, Vienna, Munich, and Milan. By dancing Perrot's choreography, she gained both public and critical acclaim.

Her greatest role was Giselle. The world première of this two-act ballet was on June 28, 1841 at the Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique, Paris. The ballet caused a sensation. Carlotta Grisi (born Caronne Adele Josephine Marie Grisi; 28 June 1819 – 20 May 1899) was an Italian ballet dancer. Born in Visinada, Istria (present-day Vižinada, Croatia). Although her parents were not involved in the theatre, she was brought up in an opera family. She was trained at the ballet school of Teatro alla Scala in Milan and later with dancer/balletmaster Jules Perrot. She was especially noted for her performance in the classic role of Giselle.

At her 1836 debut in London, Grisi performed with the accomplished danseurJules Perrot.^[1] She next appeared in Paris at the Théâtre de la Renaissance (1840) and a year later, toured with Perrot to other parts of Europe. Through Perrot's contacts, the pair worked in Paris, London, Vienna, Munich, and Milan where she sang and danced. Of her two talents, it was her dancing that was acclaimed. By dancing Perrot's choreography, which at that time was receiving great attention, she gained notable attention of both the public and the critics.

Born into the celebrated Italian theatrical family, Carlotta Grisi began studying ballet and singing at Milan's school of La Scala as a child and joined the corps de ballet at the age of ten. At age 14, while performing in Naples, she met the celebrated dancer and choreographer Jules Perrot who became her teacher and later her lover. In 1840, they made their debut together at the Renaissance Theater in Paris, in a gypsy comedy-ballet called Le Zingaro, in which Grisi both sang and danced. The following year, she was contracted by the Paris Opéra where she first appeared in Donizetti's La Favorita with Lucien Petipa. Her talent, as well as her stunning red hair and violet eyes, enchanted poet and critic Théophil
