I would like to take a moment to thank you for allowing me to serve on your town council, and for those of you who are not familiar with me, to introduce myself to you as a candidate for Winterville Town Council.

  • My name is Mark Cannon Smith, and I have spent the majority of my life living in Winterville.

  • I am married to Lisa Smith, formerly a teacher at D. H. Conley High School, who now serves at J. H. Rose High School.

  • We have five children who attend our Pitt County Schools in our community.

  • I have served as Mayor Pro-Tem for our town.

  • My family and I attend Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church here in Winterville where I serve as a deacon.

  • I am the town board representative for the Contentnea Metropolitan Sewage District and currently serve as the chairman.

  • I am a member of the Winterville Ruritan Club where I have served as treasurer and secretary.

  • I am the former president of the Winterville Recreation Advisory Board.

  • I am employed as the Director of North Carolina Driving School, Inc.

C. Mark Smith

C. Mark Smith spent forty years as a nationally-recognized economic development professional. He published his first book, Raising Cain, a biography of controversial Washington Senator Harry P. Cain, in 2011. His second book, Community Godfather, tells the inside story of how Sam Volpentest, a pint-sized giant of a man, used his political connections and sheer determination to shape the history of the Hanford Site and neighboring Tri-Cities, Washington communities. His articles have appeared in academic and historical journals in the Pacific Northwest and as far away as Turkey.

In 2014, Smith was asked by the American Queen Steamboat Company, which operates the American Empress cruise ship on the Columbia River, to write a short history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition that their passengers could reference as they cruise the Snake and Columbia rivers. In the Wake of Lewis and Clark: From the Mountains to the Sea was published in 2015 for the American Queen Steamboat Company.

Mark C. Smith (September 10, 1940 – March 27, 2007) was the founder and chief executive officer of ADTRAN.

Early life and education

While still in high school, Smith won a science fair at age 16 and met renowned rocket scientist Wernher von Braun in Huntsville, Alabama. He received an electrical engineering degree from Georgia Tech in 1962.[1][2]

Career

Mark C. Smith moved to Huntsville, where he founded two successful companies, the earlier being modem manufacturer Universal Data Systems in 1969.[1] Smith went on to co-found ADTRAN in 1986 with Lonnie S. McMillian.[1][3] As of 2007 the company had a market-cap of $1.7 billion.[3] Smith retired from ADTRAN in September 2005.[1]

Death and legacy

Mark Smith and his wife Linda were known for their philanthropic support of causes in the Huntsville area including the University of Alabama in Huntsville and the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra.[1][3]

He died in 2007 due to complications from pneumonia
