VATICAN INSIDER: FR. ED LINTON EXPLAINS WHY PRIESTS NEED CONTINUING THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION

I want to welcome you this weekend to the first edition of Vatican Insider in this New Year, in this 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope.  May it be a wonderful happy, hope-filled year for all of you!

As usual, at the start of VI, you’ll hear lots of news highlights and then you’ll meet my special guest in the interview segment…Fr. Edward Linton, the Director of the Institute for Continuing Theological Education (ICTE) at the Pontifical North American College, our American seminary here in Rome.

Fr. Linton is a Benedictine monk and priest of Saint Meinrad Archabbey. He tells us about his varied and interesting background, the birth of the Institute on the NAC campus, the twice-yearly programs it offers, extra-curricular activities and how priests can apply.

Pope Francis to embark on historic Apostolic Journey to Indonesia

Pope Francis is set to make a historic visit to Indonesia as part of his apostolic journey through Southeast Asia and the Pacific from September 2 to 13, 2024. 

This visit marks the first time in 35 years that a pope will visit Indonesia, following the footsteps of Saint Pope Paul VI in 1970 and Saint Pope John Paul II in 1989.

The Pope’s itinerary in Indonesia, from September 3 to 6, 2024, is part of a broader tour that includes stops in Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, and Singapore. 

During his stay in Indonesia, Pope Francis will engage with the faithful through a series of religious and public events aimed at strengthening the Catholic community’s faith and fostering interreligious dialogue.

Archbishop Antonius Subianto Bunjamin, Chairman of the Indonesian Bishops' Conference (KWI), expressed the Church’s profound gratitude and excitement for the upcoming visit.

In the evening of November 15, 2023, at the Apostolic Nunciature in Jakarta, a ceremony was held to present papal decorations to three distinguished citizens of Indonesia. They received them from the hands of Archbishop Piero Pioppo, the Apostolic Nuncio to Indonesia, Ignatius Jonan, Lucia Maria Liando, and Rudy Lawantara.

In awarding the decoration to the President of the Circle of Friends of the John Paul II Foundation in Indonesia, the Nuncio said, “In recognition of the merits of Ms. Lucia Maria Liando, who has dedicated her life to continuous and generous service to the Catholic Church, especially service to the pope and the formation of our priests and laypeople, she is honored with the Commandery of the Order of St. Sylvester the Pope.”

Mr. Ignatius Jonan, a former minister in the Indonesian government, was awarded the Knightly Order of St. Gregory the Great, and Mr. Rudy Lawantara received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice decorations.
