About Hans-Martin Linde

Hans-Martin Linde was born in 1930 and grew up in a musical home in Iserlohn, Westphalia. In 1947 he went to study the flute with Gustav Scheck at the Freiburg Conservatory, where he also studied choral conducting and composition with Konrad Lechner. After completing his studies he worked as a flute teacher and choral conductor in his home town. At this time he started to take a keen interest in playing the recorder and the baroque transverse flute. In 1955 he embarked on a long period of work with the Westdeutscher Rundfunk (West German Radio) in Cologne, involving regular chamber music recordings and an appointment as flautist and later even as conductor with the Capella Coloniensis. From 1976 to 1979 Hans-Martin Linde was head of the senior department of the Basel Academy of Music. From 1979 to 1995 he ran a choral conducting class, taught performance practice and directed the Academy’s choirs.

Linde, Hans-Martin, German-born Swiss flutist, recorder player, conductor, pedagogue, and composer; b. Werne, May 24, 1930. He was a student of Gustav Scheck (flute) and Konrad Lechner (composition) at the Freiburg im Breisgau Hochschule für Musik (1947–51). He played solo flute in the Cappella Coloniensis of the West German Radio in Cologne, and from 1955 he toured as a soloist throughout Europe and abroad. In later years, he appeared with his own Linde Consort. From 1957 he was active in Basel, where he served on the faculty of the Academy of Music. He served as director of its Cons. (1976–79), and then director of its choral music department at its Inst. He also was conductor of its Hochschule chorus (to 1991) and chamber chorus (to 1995). From 1980 he pursued an active career as a conductor. In 1993 he was awarded the German Handel Prize. He publ. Kleine Anleitung zum Verzieren alter Musik (1958) and Handbuch des Blockflötenspiels (1962; Eng. tr., 1967).
