This list, curated with support from Tennessean staffers and community stakeholders, represents 24 influential community leaders to follow during Black History Month 2024. Of course, there are many others, but we believe this account gives a clear snapshot of Nashville's best and brightest.

Scarpino: As I said when the recorders were off, I’m going to start by reading a statement. 

Today is February 21, 2020. My name is Philip Scarpino, Professor of History and Co-Primary Investigator with Stephen Towne for the IUPUI Oral History project funded by the campus administration. I also serve as Director of Oral History for the Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence at IUPUI. 

Also in the room is Haley Brinker, a first-year Masters’ student in the IUPUI Public History Program. Ms. Brinker is a graduate, public history intern assigned to the IUPUI oral history project and she will be participating in the interview from time to time. 

Today I have the privilege of interviewing Mr. Guy Russell in a conference room located in the IUPUI Special Collections and Archives.

I’m going to begin by putting a brief biographical sketch of you in the record so people will know who they are when they run a search on this. 

Mr.

Adolpho Birch serves as Senior Vice President of Labor Policy & League Affairs for the National Football League, which is headquartered in New York, New York.  Upon joining the NFL in 1997, his primary responsibility was the enforcement of the League’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, which encompassed issues including player and Club contract and injury grievances, benefits matters and salary cap disputes.  In his current capacity, he oversees the development, administration and enforcement of the League’s critical policies respecting the integrity of the game, including those on substances of abuse, performance-enhancing drugs, gambling and criminal misconduct.  Mr. Birch also has advanced the League’s legislative and political interests, working with federal, state and local officials on key league issues such as youth concussion laws, the league’s tax status and the FCC’s blackout rule.  He also previously directed the League’s player development efforts, which comprise a number of programs designed to support player and employee off-fiel
