William “Franklin” Graham III
President & CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan's Purse
Growing up Graham
William Franklin Graham III, born July 14, 1952, is the fourth of five children of the late evangelist Billy Graham and his wife, the late Ruth Bell Graham. Raised in a log home in the Appalachian Mountains outside Asheville, North Carolina, Franklin Graham now resides in Boone, North Carolina, with his wife, Jane Austin. They have four married children—Will, Roy, Edward and Cissie—and 13 grandchildren.
In his autobiography, Rebel with a Cause, Franklin Graham explained that “just being the son of Billy Graham won't get me into heaven.” He knew that he was being called to do more with his life and to make a real commitment to God. So, at age 22, after a period of rebellion and traveling the world, Franklin committed his life to Jesus Christ while alone in a hotel room in Jerusalem.

In the fall of 1937, she enrolled at Wheaton College, outside Chicago, Illinois, and three years later was introduced to “Preacher,” the nickname other students gave the strapping Billy Graham from Charlotte, North Carolina.
The couple began courting, and so also began a struggle in Ruth between what she thought was her calling to the mission field and her blossoming love for the driven young evangelist. In late April 1941 after much struggling in prayer, Ruth realized her life’s mission was to be bound up in Billy’s passion for evangelism. Shortly after their graduation from Wheaton, the two were married in Montreat on Aug. 13, 1943.
For a brief period, Ruth served as a pastor’s wife in Western Springs, Illinois, before Billy moved on to serve as an evangelist with Youth for Christ; as president of Northwestern Schools in Minneapolis, Minnesota; and eventually as evangelist and president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
