HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - A third Huntsville man has announced a bid for Congress.

Casey Wardynski is hoping to take the 5th district seat currently held by Representative Mo Brooks who’s running for Senate.

You may remember Casey Wardynski, that’s because he was the superintendent for Huntsville City Schools from 2011, until 2016 when he resigned. But most recently he served as an assistant secretary of the Army under President Trump.

”The attack on the unborn, the rules that they’re going to change to go after gun rights. We have a right to bear arms and it doesn’t need to be abridged,” Wardynski said.

Casey Wardynski says it’s a critical time in our nation, and he wants to advocate for north Alabama in Washington.

He contributed to the building of 450 miles of the border wall while serving as the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs under President Trump.

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Two things surprised Dr. Casey Wardynski when he took over as Huntsville superintendent nearly a year ago -- the first being a 42-year-old federal desegregation order that still influences the city school district.

Wardynski told The Times' editorial board last week that he couldn't believe Huntsville still had racial inequities sufficient to require government oversight. That has to change, he said.

"I'm surprised that Huntsville has put up with it this long," said Wardynski.

The retired Army colonel also was aghast at the lack of technology in the school system. When he arrived last July, about 80 percent of the computers in the schools were five years old or older, making them obsolete, he said.

E. Casey Wardynski (born September 3, 1957)[1] is an American government official, business executive, educator, and political candidate who served as Assistant Secretary of the Army (Manpower and Reserve Affairs).

Early life and education

Wardynski was born in Fort Worth, Texas.[1] He earned a Bachelor of Science from the United States Military Academy, a Master of Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School, and a PhD in policy analysis (economics, statistics, and decision making) from the Frederick S. Pardee RAND Graduate School.[2][3]

Career

Wardynski served in the United States Army from 1980 to 2010, including as an operations officer. He retired from the Army with the rank of colonel.
