Alwar Balasubramaniam (Tamil: ஆழ்வார் பாலசுப்ரமணியம், Hindi: अलवर बालासुब्रमण्यम, born c. 1971), commonly known as Bala, is an Indian artist known for his sculptures, paintings, and printmaking.[1]
Early life and education
Bala was born in Tamil Nadu, India. In 1995, he obtained a BFA from the Government College of Arts in Chennai, specializing in printmaking. Later, he continued his studies in prints and paintings at the Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop (EPW) and the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. He resided at the MacDowell Colony in Massachusetts in the early 2000s and transitioned into sculpture and installation work after that.[2]
Career

Balasubramaniam's works have been exhibited around the world including at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York in 2010, Essel Museum, Austria (2009), Mori Art Museum, Japan (2008) and 1st Singapore Biennale (2006). His works are also currently on view in Sk(in), a solo exhibition at The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC. He lives and works in Bangalore, India.
