Maison Margiela

French fashion house

Maison Margiela, formerly Maison Martin Margiela, is a French luxuryfashion house founded by Belgian designer Martin Margiela and Jenny Meirens[1] in 1988 and headquartered in Paris.[2] The house produces both haute couture-inspired artisanal collections and ready-to-wear collections, with the former influencing the designs of the latter.[3] Product lines include womenswear, menswear, jewellery, footwear, accessories, leather goods, perfumes[2] and household goods.[4] Known for deconstructive and avant-garde designs with unconventional materials,[2] Maison Margiela has traditionally held live shows in unusual settings, for example empty metro stations[5] and street corners.[6] Models' faces are often obscured[7] by fabric or long hair to direct attention to the clothes and design.[8] Margiela resigned as creative designer in 2009.[9]John Galliano was appointed to the role in 2014,[10] and resigned in 2024. Martin Margiela

Martin Margiela first got the fashion world thinking in 1989 with a collection that challenged what luxury could be. Applying 'grunge' techniques such as deconstruction, recycling and raw finishes, in an intelligent and sleek manner, his ideas provoked shock and intrigue. In a rejection of mass media culture, Margiela became an anonymous design hand and has hardly ever been photographed or interviewed. Working under the collective 'Maison Martin Margiela' for over 20 years, Margiela left the label in 2009, however a 'faceless' team continue to produce surreal and challenging collections.

  • Martin Margiela was born on April 9 1957 in Genk, Belgium.
  • In a rare interview with Sphere in 1983, Margiela talked about his first fashion experience. "I was watching the TV news and there was an item about (Paco) Rabanne and (AndrĂ©) Courrèges. As soon as I saw their designs I thought, 'how wonderful, people are doing the sort of thing I want to do'."
  • Margiela graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1979. Today he

Martin Margiela is a designer whose work occupies a unique and much sought-after position in contemporary fashion. The consistency of his vision has made him one of the most influential and iconoclastic designers of the last decade. Born in Limbourg, Belgium, in 1959, he studied at the Royal Academy Antwerp and was one of the first wave of talent to emerge from the city in the early 1980s alongside fashion's notorious 'Antwerp Six' collective (although not directly one of them). In 1984 he began a three-year assistantship with Jean Paul Gaultier. He then founded his own enterprise, Maison Martin Margiela, with his business partner Jenny Meirens in Paris in 1988, showing his first womenswear collection (Spring/Summer 1989) that year.

Margiela staged his first collections in unusual locations such as an abandoned metro station and a circus tent. The fashion press labelled his fashion mood 'deconstruction', (similarly to designer Rei Kawakubo's); describing Margiela's attempt to disclose the process and craft of making clothes. Mar
