Joseph Delaney was a full time writer living in Lancashire, in the heart of Boggart territory.

He was the author of Wardstone Chronicles, Starblade Chronicles, Arena 13, Aberrations and a new book came out in April 2020, Brother Wulf. This is a new spooks story featuring Tom and Alice, but introducing a new character, a young monk called Brother Wulf.

He first got the idea for the Spooks series when he moved to the village where he lives now and discovered there was a local boggart - ‘a man like me needs boggarts around’. He made a note in his notebook ‘a story about a man who hunts boggarts’ and years later when he had to come up with an idea at short notice developed this into ‘The Spook’s Apprentice’, the first book in the series.

My Biography

For years, I wanted to be a writer but from about 1990, when I was first taken on by my agent, Carolyn Whitaker, I started to write more seriously completing one book each year. I was the Head of Film and Media Studies at the Blackpool Sixth Form College and, as most teachers, was exhausted when I got home. My wife was a post lady, getting up for work at 4am each morning. So I decided to get up early too (but not quite that early!). I would write from 6-15am to 7-30am each morning before going to work. At that hour words came easily; especially dialogue.

My second attempt was picked up by Charlie Sheppard of Random House Children’s Books and I signed a three-book deal which has subsequently been extended to nine. When the USA agreed to publish the books I finished teaching and now write full time.

The Spook’s Series is partly influenced by Lancashire folk tales and places of local interest. For example, the ston

The book was widely successful, selling over 3 million copies and winning multiple awards. It has been adapted into a play script, the feature film Seventh Son, and a French graphic novel.
