AMONG THESE RUINS

This hotel is an old school,
you can feel it, though time has passed.
Despite the broken-down walls,
the smashed spaces. The people who live here
seem to be passing through. A few hours
each day. A few months.
Perhaps
they do have their own rooms,
but they seem to be constantly on the move.
I have been looking for my own room for some time among these ruins.
I couldn't say how long, but now
I've come out into what must have been a garden
or some back terrace.
From here, all the spaces are back to front.
Perhaps I will recognize the look of my room
by its own back. Or from it, perhaps, I will catch
some sound.

Coral Bracho

Coral Bracho, a Mexican writer and translator, was born on May 22, 1951, in Mexico City. She began her studies in Spanish Language and Literatures at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, was a doctoral candidate at the University of Maryland, and is now a professor in her hometown. As a writer she has published nine books of poetry, including El ser que va a morir (1981), La voluntad del ámbar (1998), and Ese espacio, ese jardín (2004), which had an impact on the national and international poetry scene. In addition, her work has been recognized by several literary awards, including the Aguascalientes National Poetry Prize and the Xavier Villaurrutia Award for the best book of the year.

Bracho’s poems bring deep reflections about the functioning of human life and nature. Her poetic construction discusses the dynamism of life and death, expressing the imminence of life through natural elements: nature and the body as one. Coral Bracho (22 de mayu de 1951, Ciudá de Méxicu) ye una escritora, traductora y académica mexicana. Realizó los sos estudios primarios n'Inglaterra y Francia pa dempués cursar la carrera de Llingua y Lliteratura Hispánica na Universidá Nacional Autónoma de Méxicu (UNAM). Ye candidatu a doctor pola Universidá de Maryland, College Park.^[6]

El so primer llibru de poesía Peces de piel fugaz publicáu pola editorial La Maquina d'Escribir en 1977. En 1978 ingresó como becaria de poesía del INBA-FONAPAS^[7] y dende 1994 forma parte del Sistema Nacional de Creadores d'Arte y foi becaria de la Fundación John Simon Guggenheim. En 1981 llogró la so primer reconocencia: el Premiu Nacional de Poesía Aguascalientes por El ser que va morrer. Collaboró como redactora nel Colexu de Méxicu pal Diccionariu fundamental del español de Méxicu, proyeutu de la Comisión Nacional pa la Defensa del Idioma Español publicáu pol Fondu de Cultura Económica en 1982.
