Nestor Haddaway (born January 9, 1965), better known by his stage name Haddaway, is a Trinidadian-German musician best known for his 1993 hit single “What Is Love”.

Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Haddaway moved to the Washington, D.C. area at the age of nine, where he grew up to the sounds of Louis Armstrong, which encouraged him to learn how to play trumpet at the age of 14.He attended Meade Senior High School. This eventually resulted in him forming his first group which he called Chances. Haddaway moved to Cologne, Germany in 1987 where he mostly worked in bars.

Haddaway’s break came in 1992 when he was signed by German label Coconut Records. His debut single “What Is Love” rapidly became popular in Europe, reaching number 2 in Germany and the United Kingdom.In Germany, the single sold 900,000 copies, in the UK, it was certified Gold for shipment of 400,000 units. It later reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified Gold for shipments of 500,000 units. By the beginning of 1994, worldwide sales of “What Is Love” had already reached 2.6 million.

He completed a doctorate in political science and history from George Washington University in Washington DC, before moving to Cologne, Germany, in 1989. He presently lives in Kitzbühel, Austria.

Haddaway's biggest hit, "What Is Love," became very popular across Europe (reaching #2 in the UK), North America and Australia after its 1993 release. Follow-up single "Life" was a big U.S. and European dance hit. His debut album spawned two more European hit singles: "I Miss You" and "Rock My Heart." His 1995 album included two minor hits, but his later releases went by largely unnoticed.

"What Is Love" has been re-mixed and re-released dozens of times. The track had a resurrection in popularity following a prominent role in a Saturday Night Live skit, which later became the 1998 film A Night at the Roxbury.

Haddaway attended Meade Senior High School in Fort Meade, Maryland, where he took up the trumpet, joined the school’s marching band, and formed an ensemble called Chance. Haddaway continued performing with Chance while studying history and political science at George Washington University. He briefly attended medical school, but left in 1987 to pursue a musical career in Cologne, Germany. In Germany, Haddaway worked in bars as well as in marketing and ran a fashion and photography business called Energy. He also joined the band Elegato, which allowed him to work in a studio.
