Richard Walter Jenkins was born in Pont-rhyd-y-fen, Glamorganshire, on 10 November 1925, the twelfth child of Richard Walter Jenkins (a miner who was fond of his pint) and his wife Edith (née Thomas). Following his mother's death barely two years later, Richard went to live with his eldest sister, Cecilia, in the neighboring village of Taibach. The family was Welsh-speaking and Richard retained his facility in Welsh all his life. There he received a decent education in the local primary school and Port Talbot grammar school (until he was 16), where he came to the attention of the schoolmaster Philip Burton, an inspirational teacher of English who had the ability to pass on his passion for drama to his pupils. Burton was made Richard's guardian in 1943 and the youngster took on his surname: one reason for this was to ease Richard's entry

CaptainSir Richard Francis Burton, KCMG, FRGS, (19 March 1821 – 20 October 1890) was a British explorer, army officer, writer and scholar.[1][2] He was famed for his travels and explorations in Asia, Africa and South America, as well as his extensive knowledge of languages and cultures, speaking up to 29 different languages.[3]
Born in Torquay, Devon, Burton joined the Bombay Army as an officer in 1842, beginning an eighteen-year military career which included a brief stint in the Crimean War. He was subsequently engaged by the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) to explore the East African coast, where Burton along with John Hanning Speke led an expedition to discover the source of the Nile and became the first European known to have seen Lake Tanganyika. He later served as the British consul in Fernando Pó, Santos, Damascus and Trieste.[4] Burton was also a Fellow of the RGS

Richard Burton was born Richard Walter Jenkins on November 10, 1925, in Pontrhydfen, South Wales. Jenkins, the twelfth child of an impoverished coal miner, lost his mother when he was two years old. He would be taken under the wing of Philip Burton, a teacher who became the boy’s guardian and introduced him to the world of theater.
Jenkins took the Burton surname and made his London acting debut as a Welsh youngster in the play The Druid’s Rest. Burton earned a scholarship to attend Oxford University and later joined the British air force during wartime.
