Sir Anthony Eden, Earl of Avon
Sir Anthony Eden, Earl of Avon was a British Conservative statesman, foreign secretary (1935–38, 1940–45, 1951–55), secretary for war (1940), and prime minister (1955–57). Eden resigned in 1938 in protest against Neville Chamberlain’s policy of “appeasement” to the Axis and became Churchill’s right-hand man during World War II.
In 1936, Eden signed the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty of Friendship and Alliance, which was unilaterally denounced by Egypt in 1951.
During World War II, he increasingly advocated Arab unity, which in 1945 took the form of the Arab League that eventually turned against Britain. Eden was aware of the Holocaust and, indeed, made a famous statement in the House of Commons in 1942 confirming that the Nazis were exterminating Europe’s Jews, but that Britain could do little or nothing to thwart it apart from winning the war.

After a distinguished military service record in World War One, he entered parliament as member of parliament for Warwick and Leamington in 1923. In 1935 he became foreign secretary at the extraordinarily early age of 38, although he resigned within three years, in protest at Neville Chamberlain's appeasement policy towards Germany.
While he always had an awkward relationship with that other prominent anti-appeaser, Winston Churchill, the latter's elevation to the premiership in May 1940 restored Eden to the Foreign Office. In 1940 - 1945, and again in 1951 - 1955, Eden was not only Churchill's foreign secretary, but also his acknowledge

Anthony Eden
Robert Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of AvonKGMCPC (12 June 1897–14 January 1977) was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He was better known throughout his time in office as Sir Anthony Eden. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford.
Eden was one of the best-known politicians of his generation. He was appointed Foreign Secretary in 1935 by Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, and resigned in 1938 in protest at Chamberlain's appeasement of Adolf Hitler. He was Churchill's Foreign Secretary during World War II, and again in 1951–1955.
He had an operation to remove gallstones in 1953. The operation went wrong, and his health was ruined. He became Prime Minister in 1955 when Winston Churchill retired. He resigned as Prime Minister in 1957, and Harold Macmillan replaced him. The Suez Crisis of 1956 was a critical period. This and his health led up to his resignation as Prime Minister. Eden died of liver cancer, aged 79. His widow, Clarissa Eden, Countess of Avon, was born in 1920 and died in 2021. She was a niece of Winston Churchill.[1]
