I was a colleague of Colin’s at Auckland University during the 1980s where in 1982 he was responsible for establishing the journal ACCESS, which is now part of PESA and in the process of relaunching as Access: Contemporary Issues in Education, having not lost an issue in its diverse 40 year Australasian history. I have had the pleasure of working with him and his partner Michele Knobel on occasions over the years. He is an authentic and inspirational intellectual who has searched for meaning through his literacy and research work over many years. It was a real privilege to engage in conversation with him.

Educationalist (1966–2021)

Michele Knobel (21 March 1966 – 15 October 2021) was a Professor of Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Montclair State University and an internationally recognized researcher and scholar in the area of literacy education, new literacies and digital technologies.

Biography

Knobel was born in Moree, Australia. She started her teaching career in 1986 working as a classroom teacher in grades 3 to 5 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Primary School in Noosa, Australia. After that, she started working as a lecturer in Literacy Education in three different Australian Universities: University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba (1990-1992); Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane (1993, 1996-1998); Australian Catholic University, McAuley Campus, Mitchelton (1994-1995). Since 1999 she has been working as an Adjunct Associate Professor in Central Queensland University in Rockhampton, Australia. It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Dr. Michele Knobel, Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning, on October 15, 2021.

Dr. Knobel was born in New South Wales, Australia.  She taught elementary school in Australia and worked within teacher education in Australia, Canada, Mexico, and the US.  She was an internationally recognized expert on literacy and digital technologies, and central to creating the field of new literacies.

Dr. Knobel will be remembered as a kind and dedicated mentor for students and as a caring, supportive, and insightful colleague.

Michele is survived by her husband, Colin Lankshear, her mother, and siblings.  She will be deeply missed by her colleagues in the Department, across the College and University community.
